Density is how often a keyword appears as a share of all the words in your text. A word used 5 times in a 200 word text has a density of 2.5%.

How it counts

  • A word is a run of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words such as “long-tail” and contractions such as “don’t” count as one.
  • Words are not case sensitive, so “SEO” and “seo” are the same keyword.
  • Two and three word phrases only run within a sentence or clause. A full stop or comma breaks a phrase.
  • With common words ignored, a phrase cannot start or end with one. “Cost of living” still counts, “of living” does not.
  • Sentences are counted by full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and line breaks, so treat that figure as a close estimate.
  • Reading time assumes 238 words a minute, the average for adults reading silently.

Questions about keyword density

What is keyword density?

It is the number of times a word or phrase appears in your text, divided by the total number of words, shown as a percentage. It is a quick way to see which terms your page leans on, and whether one of them is repeated more than it needs to be.

What is a good keyword density?

There is no magic number. Google does not publish a target, and repeating a phrase to reach a percentage tends to make writing worse. Use the table to check that your main topic shows up naturally, and to spot a word you have overused.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. The counting is done by a script running in your browser, and the tool has no form to submit. Nothing you paste is sent to our servers or saved, and closing the page clears it.

Which words does it ignore?

With “Ignore common words” ticked, it skips everyday English words such as “and”, “the”, “of” and “I”, so your real keywords rise to the top. They still count towards your total words. Untick the box to see every word.

Does it work in other languages?

The counts work for any language that separates words with spaces. The list of common words is English only, so in other languages you may want to untick that box and filter the results yourself.

How do I see where these keywords rank on Google?

This tool only reads the text you give it. To see where a keyword ranks, and how that changes week by week, add it to a Duality report.
