What is domain authority?

A score for how strong a site's links are

Domain authority is a score from 0 to 100 that estimates how strong a website's link profile is. It looks at how many other websites link to a domain, and how much weight those links carry. This tool calls it domain trust, and higher is stronger.

It is not a Google number. Google does not publish or use it. It is a third-party estimate, so treat it as a useful way to compare sites, not as a grade.

Why it matters for organic traffic

Links from other sites are one of the many signals search engines use to judge which pages deserve to be shown. A site that earns links from trusted, relevant websites tends to find it easier to rank for competitive searches, and ranking is what brings organic traffic.

The score does not cause rankings. It reflects the links that help them, which is why building real links matters more than chasing the number.

How to read your results

FigureWhat it countsWhat to look for
Domain trustThe strength of a domain's links, from 0 to 100.Compare it with sites that rank for the searches you want, not with the whole web.
BacklinksEvery link from another website to any page on the domain. The total is a size measure. One site can add hundreds of links on its own.
Referring domainsThe number of different websites that link to the domain.Usually the better sign of reach. Fifty links from fifty sites say more than fifty links from one.

A rough guide to scores

Domain trustWhat it usually means
0 to 20Few or no links yet. Typical of new sites and small local businesses that few others link to.
21 to 40A growing link profile, with some real links from other sites.
41 to 60An established site with a solid spread of links.
61 to 100A strong link profile, usually built up over years. Common for well-known brands and publishers.

This is a rule of thumb, not a standard. Scores are relative, and a lower number can still be enough to rank in a niche where competitors score lower.

How to build authority

  1. Publish something worth linking to. Original data, clear guides and free tools give other sites a reason to link to you. Links earned this way are the ones that last.
  2. Ask for links where they make sense. Suppliers, partners, trade bodies, local organisations and relevant directories often link to businesses they work with. Start there.
  3. Reclaim links you are already owed. If a page with links pointing to it was deleted or moved, redirect it to the closest live page so the links still count.
  4. Avoid shortcuts. Buying links or joining link swaps breaks Google's spam policies, and updates like the one we covered in our September 2026 spam update post are aimed at that kind of thing.
  5. Check in regularly. Authority builds slowly. A monthly look at your referring domains shows whether your effort is working, long before a score moves.

Questions about domain authority

Is domain authority a Google ranking factor?

No. Google does not use a domain authority score. It is a metric created by SEO tools to estimate link strength. The links behind the score do matter to search engines, which is why the number is a useful guide.

What is a good domain authority score?

It depends on your competitors. A score of 30 is strong in a niche where the top results sit around 20, and weak where they sit around 60. Check the sites that rank for your main searches and aim to close the gap over time.

Why is my score different in other tools?

Every tool builds its own map of the web's links and has its own formula, so scores never match exactly. Compare like with like: use one tool over time, and check competitors in the same tool.

Why does my Duality report show different numbers?

Duality's monthly reports use a different data source for domain trust, backlinks and referring domains, so the figures can differ from this free checker. Use each on its own for tracking changes over time.

What is the difference between backlinks and referring domains?

A backlink is a single link to your site. A referring domain is a website that links to you, however many times. If one site links to you 500 times, that is 500 backlinks but one referring domain.

Why does my new site show a score of 0?

A score of 0 usually means few or no other websites link to the domain yet, which is normal for a new site. It does not mean anything is wrong. It rises as you earn links from other sites.

How can I improve my domain authority?

Earn links from relevant, trusted websites. Publish content that is useful enough to be cited, build real relationships with partners and suppliers, and steer clear of paid links. It is a slow process, and a steady one works best.

Do you store the domains I check?

We do not keep a list of what people check. To save repeat lookups, a domain and its three figures are held in temporary memory for up to 24 hours, and your address is used briefly to limit how many checks one visitor can run in an hour.

Is there a limit on how many checks I can run?

Yes. To keep the tool free for everyone, each visitor can run a limited number of new checks an hour, and there is a daily limit across the site. If you hit a limit, try again later.
