How to Fix Duplicate Page Titles

Titles and descriptions Updated

What this means

Two or more of your pages have exactly the same title. The title is the headline Google shows in its results and the text in the browser tab, so these pages look identical to a searcher.

Why it matters

When pages share a title, Google struggles to tell which one fits a search. It may show the wrong one, switch between them from week to week, or show neither as high as it would show one clear page. Searchers can't tell them apart either.

The guide on page titles covers how to write a good title. This one covers why duplicates happen and how to clear them.

Why it happens

  • Templates. A theme uses the site name as every page's title, or a shop uses "Shop" for every category.
  • Pagination. Page 2, 3 and 4 of a blog or category reuse page 1's title.
  • Copied pages. A page was duplicated to save time, and its title never changed.
  • Variants. The same product appears at several addresses, such as by colour or size.

How to fix it

  1. Open the list of pages that share a title. They're grouped together in the audit.
  2. Decide what makes each page different, and put that difference first in its title. "Wedding Cakes | Greenfield Bakery" and "Birthday Cakes | Greenfield Bakery", not "Cakes | Greenfield Bakery" twice.
  3. Change the title in your site builder or SEO plugin. The guide on page titles lists where the setting is on each platform.

Pagination

Most SEO plugins and shop platforms add "Page 2" to paginated titles by themselves. If yours doesn't, check the plugin's settings for a pagination option, or ask your theme developer. It's normal for page 2 to be similar to page 1, as long as the title says which page it is.

Product variants and copies

If two addresses really are the same page, the fix is a canonical tag pointing both at one address, not two different titles. The guide on canonical tags explains this. Shopify and most shop platforms handle variants this way already.

Pages you no longer need

If two pages say the same thing, merge them into one and redirect the other address to it. One strong page usually does better than two weak ones.

Checking your fix

Search Google for your brand name plus the topic, or view each page and compare the browser tab text.

If you use Duality, duplicate titles depend on more than one page, so the next monthly audit confirms they're fixed. You can run a full audit from Site Audit if you've changed a lot.
